What can an old Godwit Lady tell us about LIFE ?

On 29th of April we, Mo Verhoeven, Jelle Loonstra, Johannes Melter, Tina Hoenisch, Nadja Rhaude, Lizzy Wegeler, Christoher Marlow and Heinrich Belting transmittered five more adult birds at Dümmer in the framework of the LIFE Project Meadowbirds.

The idea was to have birds ringed as chicks with known life history and pairs where both partners shall be transmittered. But, being busy from sunrise to sunset, we had to realize that LIFE is never as easy as an early bird in the morning promises you full of optimism. All of our wanted birds did not wanted to be picked up by us, in all cases we only got none at the nest – or just their unringed partner. Nevertheless, close to sunset, we got an old well known female. With an age of at least 18 years she is a really well-experienced Madame. She was ringed as an adult on her nest by Manfred Kipp in the year of 2003 near Saerbeck (Northrhine-Westfalia), 55 km southwest of Dümmer. Now, we call her Madame Kipp.

Madame Kipp decided already years ago to settle over to Dümmer, where she has been breeding regularly for many years. It will be interesting in the coming months to be able to follow this very well experienced bird during breeding, migration and wintering compared to the unexperienced ones.

Besides Madame Kipp we transmittered Tinadja, her history is unknown. Jellmo is the partner of Lizzalia who grew up at Dümmer in 2017 and is having her first clutch now. Nadtina is the partner of Marcelles who grew up at Dümmer in 2016. Christansiene is the partner of Christophow who grew up at Dümmer in 2016. Let’s see if we can get their chicks transmittered within four weeks.

A television team of ZDF joined us for producing a report about the project.
